Implementation of a management plan
This part of the portfolio provide will evidence of the implementation of the previously analysed leadership theories.
The theories were implemented through a management plan, which was followed at a music event called Music in the Dark, which was held at The Art School in Glasgow on April 1st 2015.
Music in the Dark was a event, which aimed to provide the audience with a unique concert experience through an absent of light, which should shift the level of visual focus and thereby increase the auditory experience. There were three performing artists at the event; Dressin Red, Arm Watches Fingers and Boooo. The event was created as part of the university course called Event Management.
The chosen leadership theories
Leaders do not generally stick to one leadership style; but rather they use many different styles depending upon the situation[20]. Hersey, Blanchard and Johnson created this idea, which is called situational leadership theory. This theory does not believe that there is one single best leadership style, but the leader had to change and adapt his style to the specific situation and the individual he or she is working with.
I agree with the situational leadership theory and I will use the theory, so I can be flexible and adapt between the three assessed leadership styles, so I can use the one that is most relevant to the specific situation.
The event management regarding Music in the Dark will be divided into three processes/parts:
First of all there will be two different processes regarding the planning and organising: The practical planning (planning the event concept and practical surroundings of the event) and the creative planning (planning the creative content of the event). The last management part relates to the management of the event itself.
I will be aiming to use the ideas and concepts of democratic leadership in the process of the planning of the event, as I want to enable the artists to have an influence on the decision-making, but I will want to have the final word regarding any decisions in the process. In regards to the creative part of this process, I want to use the Laissez-Faire theory, so the artists can have full control over the creative content of the event (within the frame of the event concept).
The autocratic leadership theory will normally not be very successful within a music environment as it can damage the creativity. However, when looking at an event management process, it can be necessary to use this theory for part of the process. While it is necessary to ensure that the artists and other employees remain creative and motivated during the planning process, it might not be as essential during the event itself, since during the event it is necessary to be able to make quick decisions; e.g. regarding changes to event schedule. So during this last part of the process it can actually damage the outcome if the decision-making is delayed. Therefore during the event I would prefer to use part of the autocratic leadership theory, so I can ensure that all decisions are made quickly and effectively.
